More Russians receive Ukrainian citizenship than other foreigners

Interfax – Russians and former citizens of the Soviet Union receive Ukrainian citizenship more frequently than other foreigners, an immigration official has said.

Director of the State Department for Citizenship, Immigration and the Registration of Individuals Yevhen Mamonov said at a press conference in Kyiv on November 18 that some 16,177 foreigners have received Ukrainian citizenship under simplified procedures, and some more 1,500 people have become citizens of Ukraine under a presidential order.

“The absolute majority of people receiving the citizenship of Ukraine come from the former Soviet Union,” Mamonov noted, and added that some 38% of them are Russians by origin, 12% Moldovans, 9% Uzbekistanis, 6% Armenians, 4% Georgians, 4% Azerbaijanis, and 2% Kazakhstanis.

According to Mamonov, from other countries, citizens of Vietnam, Syria, Afghanistan, China, Lebanon, Iran and Israel most frequently apply for Ukrainian citizenship.
