EU Directive – free movement of workers

The internal market as created by the European Union (EU) enables the free movement of workers from one EU member state to another without restrictions. An EU citizen who wishes to move to another EU country to take advantage of their right to work can do so and travel to any of the 27 full member states.  To learn more about your rights as an EU citizen or to understand how you as a worker, can move freely within the EU, you are advised to consult with a professional consultancy firm or immigration lawyer.

Free movement of workers explained

The free movement of workers is permitted under the EU Directive and is known as regulation (EEC) No 1612/68. This regulation covers a broad scope of workers and includes individuals seeking employment, individuals who have been made redundant or those who are now unfit for work, all of whom must be EU citizens.

The free movement of workers provides a number of rights to workers within the EU and includes:

- The right to work in another EU member state

- The right to look for a job in another EU member state

- The right to remain and reside in that EU member state for the purpose of working

- The right to be treated equally with regards to employment and working conditions.

The free movement of workers is just one of the four main European Union freedoms given to EU citizens and it enables a competitive and fair working market.
