What is the green card lottery

A green card enables the holder of the card to permanent reside and take up employment in the US. Holders of a green card can travel, live and work freely across any US states and they will receive the same benefits as a natural US citizen. Obtaining a green card is a very competitive process and many skilled and experienced professionals still find it hard to obtain a green card without stress or difficulties. The US introduced a green card lottery which provides 55,000 green cards each year to individuals on a random basis from a list of people that have applied for a green card.

Green card lottery explained

The green card lottery is more formally known as the Diversity Immigrant Visa program and provides annually 55,000 Diversity Visas (green cards) to be awarded on a random basis to applicants seeking a green card. This program is used primarily by individuals who could not otherwise immigration to the US.

The Department of States issues the Diversity Visas annually in accordance with Section 203c of the INA (Immigration and Nationality Act).

To register for the green card lottery applicants must do so online by filling out the online application form DV-2011 (or DV-2012 for next year, and each year thereafter).

The purpose of the green card lottery is to diversity the USA in terms of culture and thus helps individuals the chance to gain a green card if they are from a country that has low USA immigration rates. Many find the Diversity Immigrant Visa program as an unfair method of immigration as it provides easy access to permanent residency in the USA to individuals who do not necessarily meet the requirements compared to other skilled and professional workers seeking a green card through the traditional application method.
