How to obtain second citizenship

Second citizenship is the immigration status an individual can obtain which is equal to that of a natural born citizen of that country. Some countries will only allow individuals to obtain citizenship if they give up their citizenship in the other country, although many jurisdictions do allow for dual citizenship – allowing the individual to be a citizen of two countries. In order to obtain second citizenship it is important you seek the assistance of a professional consultancy firm or immigration lawyer to help you with the complete process.

Citizenship procedure explained

To obtain second or dual citizenship you should make an application for foreign citizenship to a professional consultancy firm that specialize in immigration and citizenship. An immigration lawyer or consultancy firm will help you to decide the most suitable country to obtain your second citizenship in, and will ensure the application process is completed in a stress free, timely and professional manner.

Second citizenship can also be obtained by right of birth. This means that if you are born in one country but brought up in another, you may still obtain second citizenship of your birth country.

Your family connections may also enable you to seek second citizenship. If your parents or grandparents are citizens/nationals of another country, you may seek second citizenship in your parents or grandparents country of birth. The right to second citizenship through family connections and birth right is relatively straight forward compared to the application process if you are a foreign national with no connections.

By marrying a foreign national, you have the right to seek citizenship in your partner’s country of domicile. For example if you are British, and marry an American citizen, you may seek American citizenship and vice versa.  This process of obtaining citizenship is also relatively straightforward and provided the marriage is valid, each partner can obtain citizenship of the other.

One final option for individuals to obtain second citizenship is through extended full time residency in a selected jurisdiction. By acquiring a permanent residency permit in your chosen foreign jurisdiction and staying in the country for a specified period of time, you may be eligible to obtain full citizenship in that country.
