What is dual citizenship

Dual citizenship is a status given to a person who has citizenship in two countries. Obtaining the nationality of more than one country can benefit an individual in many ways including the advantage of being able to travel between the two countries without requiring a visa.

Dual Citizenship explained

Dual citizenship holders are able to travel to the countries they hold the citizenship status in, without a visa. They are also able to take advantage of any benefits that the citizens of that country are entitled to, for example, unemployment benefits, and other state welfare.

Each country has different requirements and criteria to satisfy to obtain citizenship, however in most cases individuals are able to easily acquire the nationality of a specific country if;

  • At least one parent holds citizenship
  • They were born in that country
  • They marry a person who holds the citizenship
  • They become naturalized
  • They have been adopted by a citizen
  • They engage in an investment immigration program

In some countries, individuals are required to give up their original citizenship in order to adopt a new one. However, dual citizenship is widely recognized in favorable second citizenship jurisdictions worldwide.
