What is political asylum

Political asylum, often referred to as ‘right of asylum’, is a human right for an individual who is frightened to live in their country of domicile due to reasons including political or religious beliefs.  Through political asylum, an individual can immigrate to another country and seek protection under government’s regulations.

Political asylum explained

Many individuals seek political asylum because they feel unprotected and at constant threat in their home country. There are many reasons, which may force an individual to seek political asylum, these include;

  • Race
  • Religion
  • Ethnicity
  • Origin
  • Nationality
  • Culture
  • Inclination or association with particular social parties
  • Political opinion

All of these reasons centre on the individual feeling unsafe due to association with a particular group or society, therefore their personal inclination poses a threat on their safety. Individuals who feel targeted in their home country due to their personal beliefs are likely to immigrate to another jurisdiction where they can obtain protection and the right to live in peace.

Political asylum is a similar process to immigrating, and is often compared with a refugee status. However, a refugee usually refers to the massive influx of population from one country to another whereas political asylum encompasses individuals and their personal matters. The human right of political asylum differs from one person to another as each individual has their own specific reason for seeking asylum in a different country than their country of domicile. It is a very serious matter as, more often than not, the reasons for immigrating are political or religious beliefs. Individuals can only seek political asylum in a country that is in agreement with the United Nations Conventions Relating to the Status of Refugees.

There are various laws in terms of eligibility for political asylum in countries across the globe. Not all asylum seekers are granted the status as there are a number of criteria that the individuals need to fulfill.
