UK points-based system
In order to obtain a United Kingdom visa, individuals are required to meet certain criteria which have been outlined by the UK Border Agency. Points-based immigration system explained
The points-based system was introduced between 2008-2010 in order to regulate immigration in the UK from countries outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). The system comprises of 5 tiers that individuals can be categorized in, these include the following;
Tier 1: including subcategories of entrepreneurs, investors, post study work and exceptional talent.
Tier 2: covers skilled workers, sports/creative workers, intra company transfers, graduate trainees, among others.
Tier 3: this category is NOT in use; however, it was designed for low-skilled workers for temporary shortages. The UK Government has suspended this category.
Tier 4: specifically used for student visas, to be amended with new regulations in April 2012.
Tier 5: includes temporary workers and youth mobility such as charity workers and religious workers.
The above tier list is an overview of the five main categories provided in the UK, however the descriptions are not exhaustive. The points-based system has replaced the previously followed work permits and entry schemes that were implemented in the UK.
There is a specific number of points required in order to qualify for each category. Depending on the type of visa an applicant wishes to obtain, they are required to complete the official application form and file the relevant documentation to the UK Border Agency.
