Employment Authorization Document explained
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the body responsible for issuing an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The USCIS is also in charge of regulating and monitoring the issuance of EAD’s to applicants seeking employment in the USA. Non-residents – often referred to as aliens, who are in the US for a temporary period, are able to apply for an Employment Authorization Document.
In order to obtain an EAD, individuals are required to complete the official application Form I-765 and mail it to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), in their local or regional area. Alternatively, applicants are able to complete the form electronically through an online portal.
It is important to note that the EAD is only valid for a specified period of time, after which individuals are required to contact the appropriate authorities, and follow the relevant procedure in order to renew it. In the event that an EAD card is lost or stolen, it is important to notify the relevant authorities and obtain a replacement card.
The EAD is a plastic card, similar to the size of a credit card, and it contains a series of informational details in regards to its holder. The EAD card information includes the following details about the alien holder; name, birth date, sex, immigrant category, country of birth, photo, alien registration number, card number, date of validity and restrictive terms and conditions. The EAD card serves as an employment document and is not to be confused with a green card, which is a permanent resident card.
