Characteristics of passport fraud

Passport fraud is considered a serious offence in jurisdictions around the world and governments take extreme measures to reduce the amount of identity theft and fraud in their countries. In the event that an individual is found guilty of committing passport fraud they are forced to face severe consequences. Individuals who are guilty of forging passports and have entered a country through illegal means may be liable to face deportation or imprisonment, depending on the government’s policy regarding passport fraud.

Passport fraud encompasses a wide range of crimes, including;

  • Signature forgery of a guarantor, witness or another individual who might have the guardian ship of a minor (under the age of 18).
  • Declaring that you have witnessed the signing of documents, when in actual fact you have not. Declaring yourself as a false witness is a fraudulent crime.
  • Releasing any false information such as declaring that you have known an individual for more than 12 months and wish to act as guarantor. Being involved in such a crime can also lead to severe action from the government.
  • Using a fake identity or false birth certificate.
  • Voluntarily handing your passport to someone else for their purposes.
  • Selling your legal identity documents to another individual.

Passport fraud is a serious offence and it is advised for individuals to be aware of any illegal occurrences regarding their identity. Individuals should therefore keep documents detailing their identity, such as a passport and birth certificates, safe in order to negate any possibilities of identity and passport theft.
