Procedure of green card renewal
A green card is an important document that proves the holder of the card is a Lawful Permanent resident (LPR). It is essential that your green card is valid and on your person at all times. Green cards are typically valid for a period of 10 years and although there is an expiry date on the green card, the holder’s permanent residency status does not expire.
It is important to keep your green card valid however as it is the only way of proving your legal right to reside and work in the US. Your green card will stipulate on it the date of its expiry date and it is standard for a green card holder to apply for renewal up to 6 months prior to the green card expiring.
To renew your green card you are required to fill in form I-90 and submit it online to the USCIS. The USCIS – United States Citizenship and Immigration Services have their own website and this is where you can locate the renewal form I-90.
You are not permitted to renew your green card unless there is a maximum of 6 months left on the card until it expires. You cannot for example renew your green card 10 months in advance. You can file for renewal of your green card online or by traditional paper format.
