What to do if your green card is lost or stolen
A green card is a government official card/document that identifies the holder’s immigration status within the US. It acts as a form of official proof that the green card holder has the right to reside permanently and take up employment within the US.

Reporting a lost or stolen green card
A green card proves to the relevant authorities that the green card holder is a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) in the United States. A fine is imposed on the green card holder if they do not carry their green card with them at all times where they are ages 18 or over. Should you lose your green card or your green card is stolen, it is advised to follow the procedure below:
Traveling outside US
If your green card is lost or stolen while you are traveling outside theUSyou must report the loss or theft of your green card immediately to your local police station and obtain a copy of the police report you have filed. You must then publish an advertisement in the local daily newspaper. Afterwards, you are expected to go to theUSembassy and seek a transportation letter.
Transportation letter – is obtained where your green card is lost or stolen which allows you to acquire transportation (typically via airline) back to the US without penalty. A transportation letter is valid for one month.
Within US
If you lose your green card or find it to be stolen while you are still residing in the US you should follow the below steps.
- You must file a police report immediately
- to replace your green card you need to submit necessary form and show your ID document such as a passport or drivers license.
- You must also show a document that details your full name, date of birth, photograph and signature.
- You should also submit a copy of your temporary status documents.
