Immigration Residency & Retirement Visa

There are many forms of visas enabling foreign nationals to reside in another jurisdiction by which they may not naturally be eligible to reside in.  A residency permit can be obtained where the applicant has been offered a formal offer of employment, invests in the economy, or satisfies certain conditions as laid down by the country’s government.

Countries with reciprocal treaty agreements (such as the European Union) provide that if you are an EU citizen you are not required to obtain a residency permit to reside in another EU country.  If you are a non-EU citizen and you acquire a residency permit from an EU member state, then you are eligible to travel and reside freely within the EU.

Retirement Immigration Visa

One of the most sought after immigration residency visas is the Retirement Immigration Visa.  This visa is applicable in most countries and enables the holder of a retirement visa to reside in their preferred country regardless of their nationality.

A retirement visa can be in the form of a standard document or more commonly, a stamp in your passport and will stipulate the validity, the identity of the visa holder, and also the scope of the visa i.e. whether it allows for the holder to enter and exit the country as he/she pleases.

Conditions for a Retirement Visa

There are typically several conditions to satisfy in order to qualify for a retirement visa.  Some of the conditions attached to the retirement visa include:

  • The applicant must be over the age of 55
  • Applicant must be retired
  • Applicant must hold a valid passport
  • The applicant must have a certain amount of income coming into their bank account each month
  • The applicant must be able to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover their living expenses in that country
  • Some countries require a monetary investment into a project in the interest of the local economy
  • The purchase of real estate can count towards a form of investment by the applicant
  • Medical certificate stating good health of the applicant

Retirement Visa Application

The application procedure for a retirement visa can be quite time consuming and requires the submission of several documents to the relevant authority, normally the embassy or consulate of the jurisdiction in your country of domicile. It is advised that you obtain the services of a professional consultancy firm that specialize in investment immigration and retirement visas to facilitate the application process and help administer the necessary due diligence documents.
